KPIs

Pick a button on your site

Click the button on your live site instead of typing its words, and Needlr fills in the KPI.

In Needlr: New check, step 2
0:00 / 1:00

Every impact check needs a needle: say, clicks on Book a demo. Typing that button's exact words by hand is slow, and one typo means nothing gets counted.

Instead of typing a button's words, you can click the button on your live site. Needlr fills in the rest.

Think of pointing at a menu

In a restaurant abroad, you can try to say the name of a dish, or you can point at its picture. Pointing is faster, and nobody can mishear you.

Picking a button is pointing. Typing its words is saying the name: one wrong letter, and Needlr waits for a button that doesn't exist.

When you can use it

Good for
  • A KPI that is a click on a button or a link: Click a button.
  • A KPI that is a form being sent: Submit a form. The button is called Pick the form on my site.
  • The conditions for who counts as active in an adoption check. They're built the same way.
Use something else when
  • Reach a page: there's nothing to click. Type the page's address, like /thank-you.
  • Before your first publish to Tag Manager. The picker needs Needlr on your site, so the button is greyed out until then. Type the words for now (publishing).
  • A button that only appears after a click, or that isn't on your home page. Type its words instead.

How to pick a button

  1. 1In a new impact check, go to step 2, Which needle should it move? If you already have KPIs, press + New KPI first.
  2. 2Choose Click a button.
  3. 3Press Pick it on my site. Your site's home page opens in a new tab. If no tab opens, your browser blocked the pop-up: allow pop-ups for Needlr and press it again.
  4. 4Move your mouse over the page. A colored box shows the element under the mouse. Click the button you mean. The click doesn't follow the link: it only picks.
  5. 5The bar at the bottom says how many elements match, like 1 match. Press Use this. Changed your mind? Press Cancel.
  6. 6The tab closes. Back in Needlr, the box is filled in, and it says Picked on with the page. Choose where clicks count: Only on that page (the default) or On every page where it appears. Check the green sentence and the KPI name, then go on to step 3.

What Needlr fills in

  • Short button words (60 letters or fewer): Needlr uses the words. The box is called Button text starts with, for example “Book a demo”.
  • Long words, or none (an icon or a picture): Needlr uses where the element sits in the page's code. The box is called Button (CSS selector).
  • A form: Needlr uses the page the form is on. The box is called Form on the page.
  • A KPI you already have: Needlr says You already have this KPI. Press Use it instead of making a copy.
Watch outA picked button counts only on the page you picked it on, unless you choose On every page where it appears. If “Book a demo” sits in your header on every page and you want all those clicks, choose every page.

Check what a KPI counts

On step 2, each KPI has a small arrow at the end of its name: Show on my site. It opens your site with what the KPI counts outlined, and a bar that says how many it found on that page.

If the picker doesn't start

  • The button is greyed out. Needlr isn't on your site yet. Publish once, then try again.
  • The tab opens, but no bar appears. An ad blocker or a privacy extension may stop Needlr on your site. After a few seconds Needlr says No answer from your site. Turn the blocker off for your site, or use another browser.
  • The tab stays open after Use this. Your site may stop Needlr from sending the pick back. It copies the button's selector instead: paste it in the box in Needlr, which switches to Button (CSS selector) by itself. Or type the button's words.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing every page by mistake. A button in the header of every page then counts on every page.
  • Similar words. The rule is “starts with”: “Book a demo” also counts a button that says “Book a demo call”.
  • Words that change later. If a release renames the button, the KPI stops counting. Needlr emails you when a KPI stops firing.

What the video says

Every impact check needs a needle: say, clicks on Book a demo. Typing that button's exact words by hand is slow, and one typo means nothing gets counted.

In step 2, choose Click a button, then press Pick it on my site. Your live site opens in a new tab, with Needlr's picker running on top.

Move your mouse and each element lights up under it. Click the button you mean. The bar says how many matches it found. Then press Use this.

The tab closes and the wizard fills itself in: button text starts with Book a demo, picked on your home page. Check the name, and the KPI is ready.

One thing to know: a picked button counts on every page where it appears. The same Book a demo in your header, on pricing and on the blog all count.

Later, the small arrow on a KPI outlines what it counts, right on your live site. Pick, don't type: your needle is only as good as what it counts.
