Split tests

Test two pages (redirect)

Send part of your visitors from a page to a new version of it, and see which page moves your KPI.

In Needlr: New check, step 1 (Or send visitors to another page)
0:00 / 1:05

Sometimes the change isn't one headline: you rebuilt the whole pricing page. A redirect impact check pits the old page against the new one, and gives you a causal answer.

A redirect test sends part of your visitors from one page to a different page you built. Needlr then counts which page gets more people to do your KPI.

Think of a new menu

A restaurant prints a brand-new menu. Instead of changing one dish name, it hands the new menu to every other table, by coin flip. The rest get the old menu.

At the end of the week, it counts which tables ordered dessert. The coin decided who got which menu, so the menu is the only real difference.

Your old page and your new page are the two menus. Needlr flips the coin for each visitor, and a visitor who comes back gets the same page again.

When to use it

Good for
  • You built a whole new version of a page, at its own address, like /pricing-v2.
  • A change so big it's easier to build as a new page than to edit in the visual editor.
  • A change at the top of the page that you don't want anyone to see switching (why).
Use something else when
  • A small change to a page: words, a button, a color. The visual editor is quicker.
  • A page on another website. Both pages must be on your own site.
  • A change already live for everyone: use Before vs after.

How to set it up

  1. 1On your project page, press + New impact check. Under What are you shipping?, give it a short name and pick Split test.
  2. 2Under the Open my site and make the change button, press Or send visitors to another page.
  3. 3Under When a visitor opens, choose is exactly, starts with or contains, and type the page, like /pricing.
  4. 4Under send them to, type the new page, like /pricing-v2.
  5. 5Which needle should it move? Pick a KPI both pages can lead to (create one).
  6. 6How should we test it? Choose how many visitors get the new page, and how sure you want to be. Preview B on my site shows you the redirect before anyone else (more).
  7. 7Press Start measuring, and type the code from your authenticator app.

Changed your mind? Back to editing the page takes you back to the visual editor.

The three ways to match a page

Type the part of the address after your domain. It always starts with /. Everything after a ? in the address doesn't matter for the match.

  • is exactly: only that page. /pricing catches /pricing (and /pricing/ with a slash at the end), nothing else.
  • starts with: every page whose address begins that way. /pricing catches /pricing/teams, but also /pricing-faq.
  • contains: every page with those letters anywhere in the address. /pricing also catches /blog/pricing-tips.
TipNot sure? Use is exactly. It can only catch the page you typed.

What a visitor experiences

Opens /pricing
Counted
in their group
Version B?
random, sticky
Lands on /pricing-v2
tags come along
Visitors in the new group are counted first, then sent to the new page.
  • Version A visitors stay on the old page. Nothing happens to them.
  • Version B visitors are counted, then sent to the new page. The old page turns white for a moment, like a normal page load.
  • Anything after the page name in the address, like a campaign tag (?utm_source=ads), comes along to the new page.

What to watch for

  • A KPI only the old page has. If the KPI is a click on a button that's only on the old page, the new group can never do it. Pick something both pages lead to, like a signup or a booked demo.
  • Links to the new page. Keep it out of your menus, ads and emails while the test runs. Only Needlr should send people there.
  • A rule that catches too much. starts with /pricing also catches /pricing-faq. Check the pages your rule catches before you start.
  • A broken new page. Open Preview B on my site and click around before you start.

When there's a verdict

If the new page won, press Ship version B on the check page. From then on, Needlr sends every visitor to the new page, through your Tag Manager (how).

That's a temporary home. Later, ask whoever runs your website to set up a permanent redirect in your hosting settings. Export for your developer on the Shipped changes tab explains it (more).

Words to know

Redirect
Sending a visitor from one page to another page, automatically.
Address
The part of a web link after your domain, like /pricing.
Campaign tag
Extra text at the end of a link, like ?utm_source=ads, that says where a visitor came from.

What the video says

Sometimes the change isn't one headline: you rebuilt the whole pricing page. A redirect impact check pits the old page against the new one, and gives you a causal answer.

In step 1, choose Split test, then Or send visitors to another page. Pick how to match the page, type its address, and where the new group should land.

Is exactly catches one page. Starts with catches a whole section, like every page under pricing. Contains is the widest net: any address with that word in it.

Visitors in the new group land on the new page in a blink. The rest stay put. Each visitor is counted before they leave, and their campaign tags come along.

Watch three things. Pick a KPI both pages lead to, like a signup. Keep the new page out of your menus. And make your rule catch only the pages you mean.

When the verdict comes, ship the winner: Needlr sends everyone to the new page through Tag Manager, until your developer sets up a permanent redirect. Bold redesigns, measured, not guessed.
