Getting started

The demo project

A pretend business with sample results, so you can see what Needlr's answers look like before you connect your own site.

Before you connect anything, Needlr opens on a demo project: Acme Analytics, a sample business with real screens and sample numbers. It shows you what an answer looks like.

The demo project is a pretend business with sample results. It shows you what Needlr's answers look like before you connect your own website.

Think of a show home

When builders finish a new street of houses, they decorate one as a show home. You can walk into every room and see how it feels. But nobody lives there, and nothing you do there changes your own house.

The demo project is Needlr's show home. Every screen is real. The numbers are made up, so you can look around without any risk.

What's inside

It's called Demo: Acme Analytics. Acme is a made-up software company with a few KPIs, like Booked a demo and Started a free trial.

It has seven impact checks. Together they show every result Needlr can give:

  • Pricing CTA: “Start your free trial”: a new button text on the pricing page. Result: Improved.
  • Exit-intent popup: a popup that shows up when a visitor is about to leave. Result: Got worse.
  • Customer logos above the fold: a line about customers at the top of the homepage. Result: No clear effect.
  • Shorter signup form: still running. It leans one way, but it's Too early to call.
  • Announcement bar: 30-day trial: just started, so it's still Collecting data.
  • Faster homepage (released to everyone): everyone got it on the same day, so it's measured before vs after.
  • Saved views: a new feature. An adoption check counts how many people use it.

What you can do in it

  • Open any check and read it, just like your own (how to read a check). Each one has a Sample check tag, so you never mix it up with a real result.
  • Take the short tour. The first time you sign in, Show me an answer opens a sample check with three bubbles: This is the answer, How sure we are and The numbers behind it (more).
  • Look at the Timeline tab. The demo's sample releases show up there until you have your own. After that, tick Include demo data to see them again.

What you can't do in it

The demo is for looking, not for changing. It can't hurt anything, and it can't cost you anything.

  • You can't start, stop, preview or edit its checks, and you can't create new ones in it.
  • You can't share its checks. Needlr says Sample checks can't be shared.
  • You can't add a website to it. Create a project for your own site instead.
  • Its numbers never change. It shows what results look like, not what's happening today.
  • It never uses your measured visitors, and its checks never count as measuring.

How to start with your own site

  1. 1Open Projects in the side menu.
  2. 2Press + New project (or the Add a website box). Fill in Project name and What's your website?, then press Create (more).
  3. 3You land on the project's Settings tab. Connect Google Tag Manager, so Needlr can show changes and count your KPI (how).
  4. 4Go to the Impact checks tab and press Create your first impact check (how).

Your project sits next to the demo. You can keep the demo as long as you like.

How to delete the demo

  1. 1Open the demo project. At the top it says This is a demo project with sample data.
  2. 2Press Delete demo.
  3. 3Type Demo: Acme Analytics to confirm, and press Delete forever.
Watch outA deleted demo can't be brought back. That's fine: you don't need it to use Needlr, and keeping it costs nothing.

Only owners and editors see the Delete demo button (roles).

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for the demo to change. It never does. Your own site gives you real, changing answers.
  • Trying to connect your site to the demo. The demo can't have a website. Press + New project instead.
  • Reading the demo's results as yours. The Projects page says Demo · sample data, and every demo check has a Sample check tag.

What the video says

Before you connect anything, Needlr opens on a demo project: Acme Analytics, a sample business with real screens and sample numbers. It shows you what an answer looks like.

It holds seven impact checks, one for every result Needlr can give: improved, got worse, no clear effect, too early to call, still collecting, a before vs after, and an adoption check.

Open any of them and you see the answer: the verdict, how sure Needlr is, the lift with its range, and the numbers behind it. The same page your impact checks get.

It's a safe sandbox. Nothing in the demo touches a real website or Tag Manager, so you can't start, stop, edit or share a sample check. It never changes, either.

When you're ready, add your website as a real project. It sits next to the demo, which never counts toward your plan. Then create an impact check on your own traffic.

Done exploring? Press Delete demo on its page, and it's gone for good. The demo shows the shape of an answer. Your own traffic tells you if you moved the needle.
